As our operation has grown over the years, so has our impact on the community around us. With this in mind, Elephants Delicatessen’s mission has expanded to include a commitment to environmental stewardship through waste, resource, and emissions reductions, and helping alleviate food insecurity in the greater Portland area.
While there has been a lot of change, we remain committed to the values that we established in 1979: Serving great local foods from scratch and delivering an amazing dining experience to our guests while operating as a sustainable business in our community.
We’re committed to reaching net-zero emissions by 2030. Energy, consisting of electricity and natural gas, accounts for 80% of our company’s emissions.
Here’s how:
1. Reduce electricity and natural gas use by 25%.
2. Continue Energy Trust’s Strategic Energy Management (SEM) program.
3. Convert 90% of light fixtures to LED.
4. Replace natural gas equipment with electricity-powered alternatives.
5. Assess new equipment for future energy draw.
6. Purchase renewable energy certificates equal to 100% electricity and natural gas use.
